At Catalyst we are dedicated to preparing our scholars to achieve their dreams. By closing achievement and opportunity gaps, our educational philosophy seeks mastery along three dimensions:college readiness, career readiness and life readiness. This week we are focusing on life readiness. Here’s a quick review of what all three mean to us:
College Readiness
All scholars will be prepared to attend and graduate from a four-year college or university. Catalyst scholars will be prepared by achieving mastery of a broad, rigorous college-preparatory curriculum that both prepares and inspires.
Career Readiness
All scholars need to be equipped with the skills to thrive in the 21st century economy, including communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity.
Life Readiness
A great education cultivates confident, compassionate scholars ready to achieve their dreams.
How will we cultivate confident and compassionate scholars? How can we further boost their dreams? With our culturally-affirming humanities curriculum and by including social-emotional learning 5 days a week.
What is Social Emotional Learning?
Social emotional learning is understanding and managing emotions, feeling and showing empathy for others, establishing and maintaining both positive relationships and positive goals in life. For our young scholars, we focus on age-appropriate curriculum to reinforce these five important skills:
- Self-Awareness
- Self-Management
- Social Awareness
- Relationship Skills
- Responsible Decision-Making
Scholar goal circles, social-emotional learning curriculum, and dedicated Catalyst Community Time combine to foster a well-rounded scholar. Deep breathing, mindfulness exercises, activities and lots of reinforcement of good choices help our scholars know their feelings and grow within their classroom dynamic and as leaders.
Our SEL efforts reinforce self-control and the use of words to express feelings. We want our scholars to feel pride in their accomplishments, to be aware of others’ feelings and to have a positive self-image. We teach our scholars to ask for help when they need it and to listen as best they can.
