The start of school is right around the corner, so with a summer full of fun under our belts, we are gathering our teachers at Catalyst to prepare for the new academic year. In order to achieve our mission of creating a world-class K-8 school where all children are prepared for college, career, and life, we start with our teachers.
Every year, we train our teachers rigorously in methods of instruction, inclusive learning, and living our core values in a 4 week long teacher training camp before school starts. Life is all about learning, growing, and becoming a little better at what we do each and every day. At Catalyst, we work at learning together because being a life-long learner is an important skill for all ages!
Practice Sessions and The Power of Relationships
Teachers are chosen to work at Catalyst because of their experience and how they align with our values of helping every scholar belong, grow, and achieve. Even though all of our teachers start out strong, we lead them through a 4-week Catalyst Academy training camp because with practice, everything gets better.
Throughout our 4-week teacher training camp, we always start by huddling up to plan and celebrate each other, then we share our Why’s. Living from a deep dedication to our work together, we review instructional foundations and run simulations to give each teacher the opportunity to practice routines and techniques with their peers. This builds strong relationships and sets up a culture of connected support for our teachers who in turn build the same network to help our scholars.
Focus on Content, Craft, and Inclusive Learning
Each week of our teacher training camp progresses our teachers through detailed development in the Catalyst way of teaching their content. Acknowledging that teaching is both an art and a craft keeps our curiosities and interests piqued as we learn from and help each other to grow.
We being with a deep dive on instructional foundations for Literacy, Math, STEM, Arts, and Physical Education, all the while layering our Catalyst vision in with every step by training our teachers on anti-racism in early childhood, culturally affirming education methods, implicit bias, awareness and preparedness.
